Term 4 Jagged Smackdowns

We know we are all jagged (good at different things). This week we chose a goal from skills such as collaboration, leadership and resilience. Then we researched using YouTube, our buddies who were strong in these areas and our families at home. Then we had a minute to present what we had learnt. These are our slides:

Interesting inquiries that show we are inquisitive...

Since we got back from camp we have been collaborating in our groups to try and solve some of the world's problems and live in a more sustainable way. Different groups inquired into water pollution, kauri dieback, introduced pests and deforestation. First we had to do some research (learn). Then we created something original. Finally we shared what we had created. Here are some examples:

What do you call 20 students sitting, listening and clicking their fingers?

Poetry Slam! Of course!

This week we were lucky to have Marina Alefosio and four high school students come and perform some spoken word to us. We learnt to show our appreciation by clicking our fingers.

They gave us some great ideas for some poems so we raced back to class and had our own poetry slam straight away. Here are the top four points scorers and their poems. Well done Danielle for coming first!

Give our poets some feedback about what you liked and what you think they could work on.

Strike 3!

Yesterday we had our softball tournament at Keith Hay Park. The Wesley team used positive language and encouraged each other all day. They also showed amazing manners and sportsmanship. We won one of our games 9 - 7 and had a few close games (including a 6 - 7 loss). Lots of great catches and some awesome home runs.

Our pledges...

To follow up from our drain game visit we all made pledges about how we can help keep our water clean and safe for us and all other animals. We used food colouring to dye our wet paper, then wrote our pledges on top of them. If you like these designs we will be making calendars out of them next term. Come and see them in Room 3's window!

It's OK to ask for help...

Our wonderful Wesley Wellbeing Superheroes made this fabulous video after we looked at our wellbeing data and found that a lot of students were not very confident asking for help. This video teaches us that you can ask for help from many different people including:
-teachers
-class captains
-mediators

The Great Drain Game

This week the Kea and Hoiho teams were lucky enough to take part in The Great Drain Game, We learnt lots about what happens to our water and how different things can end up in the wrong places. Can anyone answer these questions?
1. Where does water go if it goes down an outside drain?
2. What is sediment and why is it bad?
3. How can we help stop sediment building up in our streams?

Also there is a planting event in Underwood Park this Sunday at 12:00 (see photo for details).

Toru TV: Episode 11

Week 9's behaviour of the week is showing respect by listening to others. Room 3 watched some videos and picked up 4 tips to help us become better listeners. We didn't have much time to finish our videos this week but I think they do a good job of showing the main ideas.

1. Focus on what the other person is saying, not thinking about what you're going to say.

2. Repeat parts of what the other person says to prove you are listening.

Can anyone share the other two tips?

Hit the button!

Yesterday 4 Kea students took part in the epro8 challenge at Mt Roskill Intermediate. Epro8 stands for engineering, problem solving innovation. Innovation means thinking of brand new ideas to solve problems. John, Tufui, Yonatan and Danielle racked up 160 points (and had to hit their button to get points from the organisers) and came 7th out of 12 schools. Great collaboration guys! Can you share with us what was fun and what was challenging?

Toru TV: Episode 10

It's been a while but here's our 10th episode. In Week 8 the behaviour of the week is being respectful by keeping our hands and feet to ourselves. We know this is hard to do when you're angry so Room 3 researched some tips about what you can do. Here's what they learnt... can you work out what the four tips are?

Tongan Language Week

This week has been Tongan Language Week. My awesome students have been teaching me lots of new words such as Falaite (Friday) and engeenga (yellow). What words could you teach me in your language?

Some Kea students also did a great job at presenting their speeches at assembly today...

Friday's Film Festival was a HUGE success. Well done to all classes for making such amazing films! And congratulations to Lillian and Yonatan for picking up best actress and best actor while Room 6 picked up best directing for their film. Keep an eye on the Wesley class blogs to see all entries later in the term...

Zombies!

Here is one of our Ako Hiko Film Festival entries. The theme is 'change.' Can you spot what the big change is in the film? We found making these films very challenging, especially editing the different shots and making sure they stayed under three minutes.

Need a hug?

Today Room 3 have been learning about change, grief and loss. We focused on different emotions, physical sensations and behaviours. For example, behaviours are things people do. Here is Noah's with their examples of these things. We know this is important because one day we will need it because grief happens to everyone! It was challenging because we had some new words such as anxious and presence. Our next steps are to learn what things are helpful for people going through grief.

Lights, Camera, ACTION! (nearly)

We are getting ready for the first ever Ako Hiko Film Festival. This week we have been reading some expert tips from Michel Mulipola. Then we wrote our own strories and planned how to turn them into films using different angles and shots. Stay tuned to watch the videos next week. Here is one group's plan. Well done Anaseini, Toe'umu, Lillian and Angelica.

100 Word Challenge

Room Three have signed up to the International 100 Word Challenge. Each week we get a prompt and have to write exactly 100 words about it. Here is John's mysterious piece about a door. I have sent it to the organisers and it may be chosen as a winner for the week!

Caves!

This term we are designing different places where students can go and work. This week we talked about having caves. These are quiet places where you can go to work. We also have mountain tops and swamps. Can you guess what they are for? Here's is Lillian's poster for our caves.

Statistics

This week in Maths we have been gathering and analysing data. Here are some charts we made based on the population of New Zealand (thanks Andrea - you might have to scroll across). This gave us the idea to collect some data for our own school. Stay tuned to see what we found out next week...

3, 2, 1.... BLASTOFF!

Today we launched our rockets. We changed the amount of water in the bottle to see how high the rockets would go. We found out that the less water you put in the bottle the higher it went. Can someone from the Kea team explain why?

Volume and Capacity

This week we have been learning about volume and capacity. We pretended we were trading with the island of Smati who use dribbles, plops and sloshes to measure liquids. Then we bottled up some water using their units of measurement. Here is the activity on NZ maths.

Toru TV Episode 9

This week's behaviour of the week is being responsible by acting safely. Here are some members of Room 3 acting safely on the courts. Can you think of ways you could act safely in other areas of the school like on the deck, in the bathroom, in class or on the field? Leave us a comment if you can. Also let your teachers know if you see someone acting safely this week so that they can give out tokens!

Toru TV Episode 6

Next week's behaviour of the week is showing respect by keeping our hands and feet to ourselves. We were inspired by the 'Give Nothing To Racism' adverts where racism is given no respect, no place and no encouragement. So if you see someone who is not keeping their hands and feet to themselves, give them no encouragement and help them make a smart choice.

Toru TV Episode 5

Hi all, it's been a few weeks since the last episode. This week's behaviour is to be responsible on the field and courts. One way to do this is by finding help if you need it (as Semisi, John and Cordell will show us). Can you name the other two ways of being responsible in these areas?

We also have mediators starting this week so keep an eye out for them at playtime and find them if you need help solving a problem.

Local Values

At Wesley Primary our values are respectful and responsible. We wanted to know what values local businesses had so we wrote to some of them. The Warehouse and Coffee Club kindly replied and shared their values with us. We then compared their values with our own (along with our graduate profile) to see if they were similar. This is what we found out...

NYLD 2018

This week our Kea class captains went to National Young Leaders Day. We heard lots of awesome speakers and got plenty of good advice about thinking like a leader. One of my top tips was to try and look for chances to tell people what they are good at.

MOTAT

Last Friday the Kea and Hoiho teams visited MOTAT to have a lesson on Fantastic Flight. We also explored the Simple Machines and Gearing Up exhibitions and had a ride on the tram. Can any Wesley students share what they learnt on the trip?

Jagged Smackdowns

We are all different. This week in Room 3 we have been working on our jagged profiles. This includes skills like listening, speaking, collaborating and being organised. We shared what we learnt with a one minute smackdown. Here are the slides we created with a few pictures of students sharing their work.

Resilience Writing

For the last few weeks we have been learning a lot about being resilient. We collaborated with some buddies to write some stories about how a made up character (Ronnie) showed resilience. He might BEND but he will not BREAK!

Touch!

Well done to the boys and girls in our touch teams who had an awesome time at the Eden Albert Zone day on Thursday. They represented our school amazingly, showed great sportsmanship and worked so well together. Here's our boys team who came 5th in their grade after a 1-0 win in their play-off (sorry I don't have any pictures of the girls' team).

Whanowhano

We just couldn't wait for Harko Brown to come back so we learned some of our own traditional games. We found a great game called whanowhano and then wrote our own instructions. We hope you enjoy them and give the game a try!

Toru TV Episode 4

This week our behaviour of the week is being responsible by being on time. This includes getting to school on time and getting back to class quickly after morning tea and lunch play times. Let's see how Room 3 get on. Do you think you can get back to class quicker than them?

Some of us also had a play with speeding up or slowing down time in our videos. What do you think?

Friday, March 9, 2018

Toru TV Episode 3

This coming week our focus behaviour is keeping our hands and feet to ourselves. Room 3 had a go at reading the news after thinking about what the world would be like if everyone showed this behaviour.

Toru TV Episode 2

This week our behaviour of the week is showing respect by keeping our school clean and tidy. Here is Keren, Danielle and Sofaia's example. But Room 3's shoe rack is only one small part of school. We challenge you to think about other places we need to keep clean and tidy. Maybe you could make your own videos and share them with us! Who is up for the challenge?

Hupara with Harko Brown

This week the Kea team were amazingly lucky to have Harko Brown come to Wesley Primary for the whole day to teach us some traditional Maori games. We can't wait to teach the rest of the school and start designing our hupara stumps that will be going into Walmsley Reserve this year!

Kea, leave a comment to explain what the games were and what equipment we used...

SMRF it!

Hi. New to Chromebooks? Or forgotten how to Stop, Make a copy, Rename and File a doc over the summer? Then sit back and Loseli remind you how to do it.

2018!

Welcome back to school everyone. We've had a great start to the year and have been designing our new class site. Here are some of the buttons that didn't quite make it onto the website. To see the ones that did click here.
